For the Friday 6am and 3pm classes, I ask that you give me notice that you're coming. You can either email (chanelle30@juno.com) or call (951-571-3289), and just let me know that you'll be attending. Yin Yoga

With the recent schedule change of adding a Yin class on Mondays, many have asked, "What is Yin Yoga?" Yin Yoga is a slower style of yoga, with poses designed to stretch the connective tissues of the body. Primary connective tissues include the hips, thighs and lower spinal area. These types of tissues do not stretch the muscles (as in the yang form of yoga) but they stretch and exercise the bone and joints areas of the body. This type of asana practice is beneficial to a wide variety of people.

The postures in a yin class are held for a much longer period of time, generally about three to five minutes, with some poses held even longer.

Yin yoga is a perfect match for yang yoga, and provides a deeper stretch. Although yin yoga is not as intense as other yang forms of yoga, its long duration can be difficult to maintain. Yin greatly increases mobility in the joints, peacefulness and relaxation in the mind, and an overall sense of well being.

As Balanced Life Yoga owner Chanelle Neilson instructs Brandie Sharp, Neilson's 18-month-old son Trevor meanders over to join them.

During her other sessions, affordable babysitting is available: classes are $25 a month for unlimited sessions, with another $5 tacked on for the month if babysitting services are desired.

It’s one less thing to worry about for her students, she says.

“And it adds balance, especially if you can balance work and family without that worry,” she says — one of the reasons why she calls it Balanced Life Yoga.

Since the classes started in March, she’s had several regular students looking for that particular balance in their lives.

Brandie Sharp, a physical therapy assistant who lives in Beaumont, came at the suggestion of her sister, Leslie Cammack, who had to take a break from yoga since she is currently pregnant.

“I’ve been coming for a month,” Sharp said. “I’d never tried it before. I’ve gained a lot of upper body strength and it’s helped me with my flexibility. It’s relaxing, and it’s fun.”

Chanelle Neilson has taught aerobics, but she appreciates yoga better.

“I really like yoga because you really work your whole body, and your mind,” she says. “Nothing against aerobics, but there’s more fighting your own body. It’s harder on joints. In yoga you mentally focus on your breathing, you slow things down, you control your thoughts. It’s definitely a discipline.”

As a stay-at-home mom, she wanted to reach out to others in her situation. She has four children, two of which were hanging out at the studio with her recently.

One night a week is family night, where the entire family is encouraged to participate in yoga. Neilson says that there have been kids as young as 5 participate in yoga for the whole hour during family class.

Welcome to Balanced Life Yoga!

I am excited to share my yoga practice with you! Balanced Life Yoga officially opens on Tuesday, March 1st. The classes will incorporate different styles of yoga and will mainly use the Vinyasa (or flow) method.

Yoga helps strengthen the body, invigorates the mind, and revitalizes the spirit. It allows you to breathe deeply as you quiet the mind and truly focus on the present moment. Thanks for visiting my website and I hope to see you in a class soon. Namaste.
